I understand you may be saying it's crazy to think we actually can hear God speak to us. If you fall into that category, read on! He went to great lengths to make a way for us to have relationship with Him - real, live, moment by moment relationship. He's not a statue. He's not dead. He's not just some famous person. He is Jehovah God.
He has many names throughout His Word, the Bible. Jehovah Rapha stands out to me today, as it means "The one who heals". He is the one who heals us of all sin and shame and sickness and disease. Actually, He can heal us of all of our brokenness, no matter how deep or terrible it is. As we use Rapha for an acrostic, I pray that the God of healing will speak to us all and that we will all be able to hear what He has to say!
R - RELATIONSHIP - In order to hear His voice, we must be open to a relationship with Him and be willing to spend time growing that relationship. You may recall that moment in your life when you heard Him speak to you the first time. Can't really explain it - you just knew it was Him speaking. That was the beginning and your response determined the next steps.
A - ASK Him to speak to you through His Word. I have found in my life that when He is teaching me something, I will hear it in a song, my preacher will preach (not just a sermon, but a series!) on the topic, it will be in my Bible reading, someone in my life may bring it up, and it will seem as if I'm being bombarded by that one topic. He uses this approach often with me. I wonder if I'm hard of hearing!
P - PRAY to receive His guidance and direction. I remember the point in my life when I realized that He is in each of my days, whether I am aware of it or not. It's a fact. He will never leave us nor forsake us, so He is here in the middle of it with us. Often the problem lies in us not receiving His guidance and direction - or maybe we don't want it. Maybe we just want to do what we want to do. Pray that He will have His way.
H - HEAR His voice in whatever way it may come. Step out of the physical world and into the spiritual world, where things don't always fall in line with physical laws. He is an invisible God, but we can see Him at work and we can see the result of Him moving in someone's life. He is real.
A - ACCEPT and believe that it's really Him. When you think maybe you heard from Him ( and you have already asked Him to speak to you), believe it when He does! My husband was offered a job a few years ago. We prayed and laid out seven things that would be signs to us that God was saying "yes" to accepting the job. When all seven were "yes", it was so easy to take that step of faith, knowing that He had already spoken.
Remember that God doesn't live up in the sky above the clouds, far, far away. He is right here. He is with us. You can hear Him speak. One of my favorite verses is in Isaiah 30:21 - Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." All we have to do is accept that it's Him and then step out on faith! What an awesome adventure this is!
