When on one of these little trips, I sometimes decide it will be fun to get off the beaten path, or interstate, and get into some windy roads, where the scenery and views are spectacular! I recall a time I did just that, and wound up on a road that narrowed, then turned to dirt and gravel. The woods thickened and civilization seemed to be disappearing. That was a little scary. After maneuvering my vehicle very carefully, I was able to turn around and get back to familiar territory.
In life, we sometimes do the same thing. We start out following God's direction very carefully. We stay on the interstate. Sometimes, though, the interstate seems boring and loses its appeal. So, we decide to go "exploring" - even though He says it's not the best way for us and that there's danger in our own plan. He doesn't stop us. He goes with us. At the point we take over the steering wheel, He moves to the backseat, still whispering guidance, but in our selfishness and desire for control, we often ignore that quiet voice in the backseat.
In my own experience, there have been a number of times that I pushed Jesus to the backseat of my life. Knowing He has a perfect plan for me ( and for you), I chose to disregard that and do my own thing my own way. His plan for me didn't change with my self-induced detour. I wonder, though, what I missed, had I followed His perfect itinerary for my life. He doesn't call us to a life of regret and shame, though! I don't sit around hating that I made bad choices.
He has shown me over the years that He is faithful and that He is weaving a beautiful tapestry called "my life". This tapestry includes my own detours, which He has made right. And it also includes detours He has brought about (that I had no control over), in order to teach me something He felt was important. One time in particular, was a job loss that, in the end, moved us away from "the place we were going to be forever" - in our own minds!
I'm learning that each part of our journey leads us to the next step, and that next step is not the end. We will never "arrive", until we step into eternal life, or He comes to take us with Him. Our journeys will continually be unfolding and growing and changing. Then, as we move along, we can look back and see the inter-weavings in our lives and He will reveal to us some of the "why's"!
It just completely blows me away that He has so intricately set a course for my life. He never sways or changes His mind. He makes adjustments along the way, to best meet our needs. It's kind of like parenting. When our children are born, we have a goal in mind for them to be successful, happy, God-loving adults. As the teen-age years roll by, our goal is still the same, but choices they make along the way may require a shift in the specific path we, as parents, had chosen to lead them on. We don't leave our kids, though - we go with them, encouraging them to get back to the "best way".
Take a moment today to examine where you've been and where you are going. Check your GPS, God's Perfect Scenario, to make sure you're following His and not yours! From this point forward, we can choose to completely follow His guidance and His ways, and receive every blessing He has for us. Don't miss out!
