I have a secret, though, that could change your life. It's not really a secret at all. It's really good news, if you find yourself in a place of trying to be "strong enough" to not give in today.
We all come from different places in life... different beliefs... different experiences. There is one thing, though, that we all share, and that is we are all human. We are sinful at the core. We may be "good" people, with good "want-to's" and good intentions. We may appear on the outside to have it all together - happy family, successful career, enough money to live comfortably and maybe take a vacation, we may even go to church every week - but what is going on inside?
When sin entered the picture back in the Garden of Eden, a black hole was placed in the heart of humans. We were born with this black hole. It is like an all-you-can-eat buffet. We pour things in - nice cars, money, tasty food, relationships, illicit sex, drugs, power, travel, control, knowledge, big houses, the list goes on forever - and it doesn't satisfy. It seems that rather than filling up that black hole, the hole goes even deeper, with no bottom to be seen. The more we pour in, the more we need. The more hidden our buffet bar is, the harder it is to walk away from it. We grasp desperately in want for more.
A number of years ago, I was in bondage to Satan's trickery. I appeared good on the outside, but I was a mess on the inside. And, yes, I was a Christian at this point. I was even involved in church. I tried to escape the bondage that sin had me in. I tried with all my might to be good. It seemed, though, that I couldn't break the thoughts - and the control the devil had in my mind. Left alone, the war raged within my soul. That was enough to make me lose my mind.
If you find yourself in a place like that, know that you are not alone. Know, too, that you do not have enough strength, will-power, endurance, mind-set, or ability to overcome whatever it is that has you bound in chains, unable to change. The only way to overcome Satan's chains of despair and defeat is in Jesus.
I remember so clearly the day I started to figure this whole thing out. I had just learned about the roots of sin. My mind flashed to my grandparents' garden - I remembered the weeds, and how when Papaw would ask me to help him pull weeds, he would always say,
"Now, Charlie, make sure you get the roots, too."
As I learned from him, I realized that we pick flowers and we pull weeds! It is so important to get the roots, in order that the weeds don't grow back, because when they grow back, they grow back with a fury.... almost impossible to pull. Just like sin.
The day I started to understand about roots, I prayed a new prayer. I didn't just ask Jesus to forgive me and help me not do that again. I said, "Jesus, I know that there are roots buried beneath all of my sins. These roots go so deep. I cannot dig up the roots. I know You are the only One who can. So, right now, get Your holy Roto-rooter out, and dig out my sins and their roots and everything that has to do with them. Your blood has already covered me. The work has already been completed. Please dig out the root of ________________ (some roots are: spirits of sickness, whoredom and idolatry, perverseness, lying/deceiving, bondage, haughtiness, jealousy, sleep/slumber and fear). Throw the roots of my sin as far away from me as the East is from the West. Thank you, Jesus."
As I became aware of other roots that were lodged in the soil of my soul, I had a new prayer to pray. It truly changed everything about my life. I can say, I truly walk in the freedom that only comes from Him.
That black hole that is in each one of us has only One source that can satisfy. His name is Jesus. Our black hole is insatiable - we either can't get enough of sin, or we can't get enough of Jesus! The awesome thing about having Jesus fill our black hole, is that He brings freedom and life. We don't have to live in defeat. Satan does not have to win.
I encourage you to pray that prayer - filling in your own little secret in the blank- and watch what happens! I promise, you will become a new creature!
Galatians 5:1 It is for FREEDOM that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
