The Turtle

Crashing waves. The roar of the ocean. Crystal blue water for as far as the eye can see. Ocean breeze blowing through my hair. Warm sunshine beating down on my shoulders. Lava rocks everywhere - boulders. Saltwater spraying wildly. And turtles. Big ones. A lot of them.

It seems like so long ago that we were on the beautifully breathtaking isle of Kauai. Only a few short weeks have passed, though, since we walked in paradise. It is truly my favorite place on this planet.

While visiting Queen's Bath, we happened upon a number of beautiful and amazing sea creatures - the sea turtle. I was amazed at how they were tossed by the rushing waves, hitting rocks, flapping their flippers, and somehow staying afloat. Yet, the chaos of the crashing waves didn't seem to bother them. They would dive down into the blue sea and a moment later, their head would pop up, almost appearing to be human. I had never witnessed anything quite like that.

Sea turtles are given everything they need to survive and even thrive in the environment in which they live. Their light and hydrodynamic shell allows them protection and the ability to glide easily through the water. Their flippers are strong and allow them to swim long distances.

I thought about these qualities and wondered how in the world we could relate to a sea turtle, and how Someone much greater than us has provided everything we need to survive and thrive.

Well, first, we live in a world that at times tosses us about. We run into divorce or the death of a loved one or the loss of a job or a burglary or major water damage to a home or an addiction that has taken hold or a serious illness or a totaled vehicle... the list goes on and on. Some come out of nowhere and some have been growing over time. Whatever our "crashing wave" is, He is there in it with us. He is our shell - our protection. We may be battered and scarred. We may get a scratch, or flip upside down, but He is our mainstay, our protector.

As we step into each day, let's not forget to put our armor on. He clothes us with the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation, the belt of truth, the shoes of peace, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Satan attempts to shoot fiery darts at us, but when we are properly dressed by our Father, Satan has no chance.

If you're feeling defeated, oppressed, and overwhelmed by life, remember who's hands you are in. Shift your eyes upward. Speak His word over your life and don't listen to the lies Satan tells you. And above all, stand. Stand strong.
